Members of the European Parliament (EP) will call on the Foreign Policy Service of the European Union (EU) and member states to develop their own initiatives on the situation in the Middle East in order to immediately restart the peace process. The vote on the Middle East resolution at the European Parliament’s plenary meeting in Strasbourg will be held today at 13.00 Moscow time. The agency states that the EP’s decisions on foreign policy issues are not legally binding, but other European institutions should listen to the opinions of members of the European Parliament.
It is stated in the text of the document that the AP declared its support for the two-state solution (Palestine and Israel) based on the 1967 borders. European lawmakers propose that Jerusalem become the capital of both states.
The EP also plans to call for the immediate release of all hostages and for those responsible for terrorist attacks and violations of international law to be brought to justice. The resolution also refers to Israel’s right to self-defense and calls on the country to distinguish between the Palestinian people and Hamas.
