An unexpected turn in the case of the arrested Civic Platform politician Włodzimierz Karpiński, who, as a result of a rather bizarre and complicated situation, could become a PO Member of the European Parliament.
If Krzysztof Hetman, Member of the European Parliament from the Polish People’s Party, is given a parliamentary mandate in constituency No. 6, he will necessarily be obliged to resign from his mandate as Member of the European Parliament.
According to the electoral regulations, Hetman’s mandate as Member of the European Parliament should be taken over in 2050 by Joanna Mucha of Poland, who took the next seat after Hetman in the last European Parliament elections. However, Joanna Mucha is running for the Sejm and if she wins a mandate, her trip to Brussels will not take place.
Electoral logic
According to electoral logic, this temporary mandate would go to the account of Riad Haidar of the Civic Coalition, but he died on May 25, 2023.
Therefore, next after the late Haidar is Włodzimierz Karpiński, for whom becoming a member of the European Parliament could be a ticket to freedom. Karpiński, former Minister of Finance in Donald Tusk’s government and chairman of the MPO at Warsaw City Hall, was arrested by the CBA on February 27, 2023 in connection with corruption charges brought to him regarding the so-called “garbage scandal” , which he himself admitted.
Together with Rafał Baniak, he is suspected of arranging contracts worth around PLN 600 million after knowing them.
If Krzysztof Hetman and Joanna Mucha were to resign their mandates as Members of the European Parliament and decide to take their seats in the Polish Sejm, Włodzimierz Karpiński, who is in custody, would have to apply to the court for the opportunity to take the parliamentary oath which would automatically earn him a parliamentary position. immunity.
