In a tongue-in-cheek post on social media, Szczepan Twardoch referred to the hysteria of some opposition supporters who spoke of the “end of democracy” during the years of PiS rule. The famous writer noted, among other things, that the ruling party gives up power and does not try to retain it by force.
In his social media post, Twardoch writes about his joy at PiS’s defeat. However, he asks his audience what they now think about the alleged lack of democracy over the past eight years.
Ladies and gentlemen, while I am happy with the election results, I would like to ask what about the 1,231,412 goals of democracy that you, the leaders of Polish intellectual life, have been promoting on every occasion since 2015, on average three times a month , have you announced? This democracy is looking pretty good for something that has ended so many times. What about the PiS dictatorship that will “never give up power”? She just lost the election and is giving up power? It doesn’t make logical sense. So maybe there never was a dictatorship, we still lived in a democracy, it was just a party we didn’t like that was in power, and you’re just unbearable hysterics? But is this too daring a concept?
– we read in the writer’s contribution.
Brejza’s response
Dorota Brejza responded to Twardoch’s entry. The wife of a Civic Platform politician decided to draw the writer’s attention to the fate of her family. He writes, among other things: about the alleged use of the Pegasus system against her.
What is the name of the state system in which the secret services carry out the political orders of the ruling party, monitor the opposition with cyber weapons, and the public prosecutor’s office does not follow the principle of legalism in political matters and uses material obtained illegally with Pegasus, which is then leaked to the public media and becomes a tool for spreading systemic, organized hate? What is the name of the system of a country in which the courts are politically ‘frozen’, the system of drawing judges is manipulated and promotion is determined or destroyed by a specific decision?
The foundations and guarantees for democracy are laid down in the constitution and mainly boil down to the implementation of the principle of the separation of powers. Please read the Constitution and then answer the question whether it is just a theory or real guarantees that work in practice. There are a million examples of them not working. I invite you to visit us – I will be happy to tell you about the last years of our lives. Please read @Kokot_Michal’s book “Poland under wires”. This is a photo of the country that Poland has become. And this is neither exaggeration nor hysteria, it is a diagnosis.
Democracy is not reduced to the fact of elections and the counting of votes. Just like it doesn’t mean you can go to a protest or write a tweet. Democracy is a process, and its loss can – as you can see – be missed
– writes Brejza.
In response to her entry, Twardoch recalled the Watergate scandal in the United States.
What do you think of a situation where the incumbent president orders a wiretap on his rival’s headquarters for use in the upcoming election campaign? As you know, this is exactly what happened in the US in the early 1970s. Did this mean that democracy in the US ended and dictatorship took over? The way Pegasus was used in Poland – and this is not just a Polish problem, let us add – is scandalous and I hope that the guilty will be punished. PiS rule also violated many other democratic norms and practices, which, however, did not turn Poland into a dictatorship, and indeed damaged democracy, but did not put an end to it, as you can see in the attached image.
