The European Union does not recognize Taiwan as an independent state but advocates maintaining ties with Taiwan. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an opinion article published for a Chinese newspaper. South China Morning Post.
Borrell emphasized that in the story with Taiwan, there should be no intimidation, pressure and provocations and no use of force on the part of both Taiwan and Beijing.
However, he noted that the European Union defends bilateral relations with Taiwan that do not imply political recognition of independence and calls for tensions to be resolved through diplomacy.
Josep Borrell is on a working visit to Beijing from 12 to 14 October. He will meet with many Chinese politicians, give a speech at Peking University and also attend the 12th meeting of the EU-China Strategic Dialogue.
