Two Legia footballers arrested by the Dutch police
Two Legia Warszawa players – the Portuguese Josue and the Serbian Radovan Pankov – were taken off the bus by the Dutch police after the Conference League match against AZ Alkmaar (0:1) and taken to the police station. There were fights in the stadium and the physical integrity of several members of the Polish team was violated.
According to Polish journalists present at the match, the confusion arose when local police and security forces decided to close the stadium, allegedly to avoid a clash with an organized group of fans of the capital club who were about to enter the stadium to leave. Legia representatives, including the players, had difficult access to the bus and verbal altercations and scuffles broke out. Eventually, police cordoned off the vehicle, which already contained a significant portion of the team.
As reported on the TVP Sport website, “the officers reacted allergically to the media. There was aggression and violations of physical integrity. Some were interrogated and asked… who they were on the phone with. The whole situation started seem absurd.”
At one point the police decided to arrest the players Josue and Pankov, otherwise they threatened to storm the bus. Phone video showed Legia’s Portuguese captain being led through a police cordon and handcuffed, according to journalists. The owner and chairman of the capital club, Dariusz Mioduski, became involved in the case and was heavily pulled by one of the officers.
The players went to coach Kosta Runjaic and team manager Konrad Paśniewski, among others.
