In October 1993, the day after tanks attacked the Supreme Soviet building in Moscow, U.S. President Bill Clinton congratulated Russian President Boris Yeltsin on his handling of the situation. Clinton later told Yeltsin: “You did everything exactly the way you were supposed to do it, and I congratulate you on the way you handled it.” Yeltsin responded with the following words: “Thank you for everything. “I embrace you with all my heart.”
Clinton also asked during the phone call whether the elections in Russia would be held as planned and what would happen to Yeltsin’s opponent. Thereupon, the Russian President said that he could enter the record books after three elections in three years.
