Peter Szijjártó, head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations, said Budapest was convinced that new EU sanctions packages against the Russian Federation were not needed. This was reported by TASS.
He claims that no professional assessment or analysis has yet been carried out regarding the EU’s imposition of sanctions against Russia.
Szijjártó believes that discussions about new sanctions are always of an “emotional, political and ideological” nature.
“If we look at the sanctions from a pragmatic point of view, we see that they harm Europe more than Russia,” the minister emphasized.
Before that Szijjarto statedHungary is currently dependent on oil and gas resources from Russia, with no alternative.
The diplomat called out unfair accusations from other European countries that Hungary adheres to pro-Russian positions while continuing cooperation with Moscow in the energy field.
The diplomat also reminded that the Hungarian government is trying to diversify oil and natural gas sources and distribution routes, but these efforts have been hampered by the lack of pipelines with the necessary capacity in the region.
