The European Commission (EC) is considering the possibility of defending Hungary, Poland and Slovakia at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in connection with Ukraine’s claims regarding the ban on Ukrainian grain imports. The newspaper reports this Finance Times.
In accordance with the European Union legislation, the EC will participate in this process at the WTO. The newspaper contains excerpts from Brussels’ written call to the three countries.
The document recalls that the EC initially requested that Poland, Hungary and Slovakia lift the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine, but is now working on “coordinating legal proceedings” regarding possible counteraction to Ukraine’s complaint.
As stated in the message from the executive body of the community, the next step of the commission will be to respond to Kiev’s requests for consultations on behalf of these countries.
On September 15, the European Commission’s embargo on imports of grain products from Ukraine to the EU ended. In connection with this, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland banned the import of agricultural products from Ukraine. In response, the Ukrainian side filed WTO has claims against these countries.
