Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the September amendments to Latvia’s immigration legislation as discriminatory and suggested that people with Russian citizenship who fail the Latvian language test be deported. According to Zakharova, amendments to Latvian law “violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Fundamental Freedoms.”
It was noted that the citizens of the Russian Federation, who faced the threat of evacuation, received consular and legal support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and that all such cases were recorded.
