A group of high-ranking officers in Gabon on the morning of August 30 spoke with a statement on the country’s main television channel regarding the annulment of the presidential election results and the abolition of the institutions of power. The officers declared that they had taken power into their own hands and represented the country’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces. Against this background, there were reports of a gunfight in the capital, Libreville.

Sergei Fedorov, one of the leading researchers of the European Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the coup in Gabon after the seizure of power in Niger further weakened France’s African policy. According to him, the main problem is that African countries are not satisfied with Western influence.
