“Restaurateurs say they have been left to their own devices. Their fate is of no concern to the city administration,” Juliusz Podolski, a food critic and expert on Poznań’s gastronomy market, told PAP.
As he stressed, the problems with the renovation of the Old Market coincided with a number of other problems that the entire industry was facing. They are mainly related to the increase in prices and costs.
The renovation of the Old Market Square in Poznań began in 2021. Since then, residents and tourists have had problems visiting the “heart of Poznań”, and the owners of local restaurants have had problems with customers whose renovations and associated renovations have taken place, among others. robots and dust, discourage you from taking advantage of the gastronomic offer.
Culinary critic and expert on Poznań gastronomy, Juliusz Podolski, told PAP that Poznań authorities knew what to expect during such a major renovation. They could also predict what not only restaurateurs, but also other entrepreneurs will face.
Earlier we had a similar situation during the reconstruction of the nearby Kolegiacki Square. There were four eateries – all of them had a problem with people not being able to reach them, they had to wade through rough terrain, digs, entanglements. A similar problem also occurred on the reconstructed ul. St Martin. Before the start of the works on the Oude Markt, the city council drew no conclusions from these situations. No sensible plan or proposal has been prepared for restaurateurs
– emphasized Podolski.
He notes that the restorers of the Oude Markt say they have been left to fend for themselves.
Their fate is none of the city’s concern. The problem with the renovation of the Old Market Square has joined a number of other problems facing the entire industry, mainly related to the rise in prices and costs. There is no money coming in, because we have another year in which the local catering industry cannot function normally
– noted Podolski.
The Old Market is dying
The Old Market was already dying. People stopped going there because they couldn’t park the car anywhere. Summer for gastronomes has always been a moment of forging: it was possible to plot gardens and enjoy popularity. The guests were driven by events organized on the Oude Markt, eg National Festival of Good Taste. During their duration, it was difficult to reach restaurants or gardens
– added.
Podolski pointed out that there are currently gourmet gardens here and there in the market, but – as he said – “food on the construction site is not very appealing”.
Tourists who spend the night in Poznań, instead of going to the Old Market Square in the evening, move to premises in other places of the city. Visitors to the fair forgot about the Oude Markt and moved to places where it is easier to reach and park
said Podolski.
He also expressed the hope that the Oude Markt will function normally again on 11 November. Then – as he said – the inhabitants of Poznań and tourists can go to the restaurant for the increasingly popular goose meat.
However, it will only be one shot. You’ll have to wait until the warmer months for more traffic. In winter, gastronomes from the Oude Markt will have to fight to survive
– he said.
According to Maja Chłopocka-Nowak from Poznańskie Inwestycje Miejskie, construction work on the Old Market Square will be completed in the second half of November.
The revitalization of the Oude Markt is an investment with EU funding. This task should be completed by the end of 2023.
