The head of the Niger rebels, General Abdurahman Tchiani, said the coup saved not only his country but also neighboring Nigeria from imminent disaster. The general’s words were quoted from a newspaper published in Nigeria. Daily Confidence.
Tchiani claims that the military, which will overthrow the country’s President Mohamed Bazum, acted in the “best intentions”. With their actions, the rebels removed the “imminent threat” that would affect not only Niger but also neighboring Nigeria.
The publication states that it is not clear what kind of threats Tchiani had in mind, as he did not want to give any details. The newspaper emphasized that Tchiani’s remarks came immediately after the Nigerian military department’s statement that Nigerian military personnel were incited to violently overthrow the current government. Such incitement has been termed “immoral and unpatriotic” by the Nigerian Ministry of Defense.
