Alerts from the electronic barrier that streams to the Surveillance Center are enabling operators to quickly send patrols of Border Guard officers to places where there are attempts to cross the border illegally and effectively detain people, the Border Guard wrote on Twitter on Saturday.
She added that damage to the barrier is constantly being repaired.
The entry is accompanied by a video showing a person breaking through the barrier, putting something on the concertina and trying to reach the Polish side. He steps back at the sight of approaching Polish patrols.
On June 15, the Border Guard officially received the last part of the electronic barrier at the border with Belarus. This stretch is 25 km long and is located near Białowieża and Narewka. The works were extended on the 150-meter section, where the installation of devices was prevented by flooding. The rest of the episode, as reported by the Border Guard spokeswoman in early May, was still in progress.
Since construction was completed, a system of cameras and motion sensors has been monitoring 206 kilometers of the Polish-Belarusian border. So it works for the entire planned length, but it is still configured, calibrated and integrated.
According to initial announcements, the electronic firewall should be ready by the end of last year. This deadline has been postponed due to delays in the delivery of thermal imagers. A total of ten sections had been received by February, but field conditions prevented the final section from being completed.
The contractor of the system is Elektrotim. The 206 km long dam is equipped with 3,000 day-night and thermal imaging cameras, 400 km of detection cables and 11 teletechnical containers. The cost is approximately PLN 343 million.
Last summer, a physical dam was completed in the Podlasie section of the border with Belarus, ie a 5.5-meter fence made of steel spans topped with barbed wire. The fence stands for 186 kilometers. The electronic barrier also covers the parts where it is not present, namely part of the border waters.
The barrier at the border is a response to migratory pressure from the Belarusian regime, which has persisted since mid-2021.
The cost of the total investment is approximately PLN 1.6 billion.
Response of Polish patrols
As Deputy Minister Maciej Wąsik argues in his Twitter post, the perimeter system allows a quick response from Polish patrols.
Belarusian services use power tools to destroy the barrier, but the perimeter system allows immediate and accurate dispatch of a patrol. The patrol prevents illegal passage to Poland. That is how it works. Sometimes stones fly on the patrol.
