“All boundaries are already crossed. Speaking of a firewall, blocking the National Recovery Plan. If we add to that the financing of the Trzaskowski campus, we see that it is one whole and that there is danger,” says Anna Zalewska, PiS member in an interview with the wPolityce.pl portal.
wPolityce.pl: Member of Parliament, how do you assess Manfred Weber’s refusal to take part in the debate with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after announcing that he would fight PiS rule?

Anna Zalewska: The EPP with Manfred Weber at the helm reveals all the maps that summarize the last decades of European, German politics and its branch in Poland, which is called Civic Platform. All boundaries have already been crossed. Speaking of a firewall, blocking the National Recovery Plan. If we add the financing of the Trzaskowski campus to that, we see that it forms one whole and that the danger is approaching. This is what this election is really about. Because the victory of Donald Tusk’s EPP is primarily a threat to Poland’s sovereignty. There is complete agreement on this, including the Civic Platform. They vote the same. We see it during votes on amending treaties, on removing powers from member states. And especially about abolishing the veto, ie striving for the federalization of the country. There is also an absolute gain, as they are increasingly saying, from Donald Tusk for resetting with Russia, ie enabling the construction of Nord Stream 2. At that point he became President of the European Council and left the position of Prime Minister of Poland. Now he is looking forward to the position of commissioner Usruli von den Leyen. This should be a reward for putting Poland on the road to federalisation.
How then will PiS fight for Polish interests in the European Parliament? Recently, in the context of threats from the European Union, President Jarosław Kaczyński spoke about taking away Poland’s state forests.
This fight becomes symbolic. We have already voted in the substantive committees that prepare opinions for the Constitutional Committee in the European Parliament. We voted for or against the exclusion of exclusive competences of Member States in the management of forests, land, water and energy. Each time, in these committees, members of PO and, to my surprise, PSL, were absolutely “for”. As far as State Forests are concerned, their place is currently guaranteed both by law and by the Constitution. Their operation is still guaranteed by the judgment of the Court of Justice, which ruled that NGOs have the right to manage and assist forest management. Being a national asset to which Poles have become accustomed, forests have become a symbol of freedom and those powers that are absolutely guaranteed in the treaties.
And furthermore: how do you view the entire climate package? Do you think there is a real chance to resist change? Should Poland adapt to EU plans?
Firstly, I am very pleased that what I have said so many times has been challenged, namely that the ‘Fit for 55’ Regulation contains an incorrect legal basis for Treaty provisions relating to the environment. In general, the package concerns taxes and energy, and this is the exclusive competence of the Member States. Second, the assumptions were made before the pandemic. The changes that have taken place in the economy have not been analysed. Therefore it is not feasible. As citizens, we cannot bear the costs of this transition. And the EU budget is no longer limited to €65 billion. The EC would like to take this money from the member states. Most likely there will be an attempt to attack corporate taxation, ie the budgets of individual countries. There is no permission for this yet. The closer the elections to the European Parliament get, the more this greenness loses. The European media is talking about pulling the green brake. As a result, the Greens are losing support. Let’s hope that Timmermans makes himself available to the public. And we can say: “Didn’t we tell you?!”.
