Lieutenant Colonel Mikko Lehmus, head of the Situation and Risk Analysis Center of the Finnish Border Guards, said that the Finnish authorities did not exclude a complete closure of the Russian border. In an interview with Yle, he noted that the country’s leadership is considering several scenarios in case of a serious Russian influx.
“If they come without any reason, they will be denied entry. The Border Guard Act ensures that border crossing points can be closed as a last resort,” Lehmus said.
He added that Helsinki will close the border if there is a risk to the security of the state. Lehmus emphasized that the Finnish border service is ready for any situation, even for thousands of illegal immigrants, but does not expect such a scenario for the Russians. At the same time, the representative of the ministry did not specify the exact number of visitors that will force the country’s leadership to go for the complete closure of the border.
