UN Secretary-General’s Assistant for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said at the Security Council meeting that the flooding caused by the collapse of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant exacerbated instability at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
“The flooding exacerbated the already unstable situation in the Zaporozhye NPP. IAEA experts continue to closely monitor the availability of cooling water for nuclear power plants. Ensuring its security is extremely important not only for Ukraine, but for the entire region,” he said.
He noted that the collapse of the Kakhovka dam and the subsequent flooding had long-term environmental and human consequences.
Prior to that, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said last week that experts from the organization afflicted Additional inspections and tours at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. According to him, during the inspections, IAEA experts did not find any signs of the presence of explosives, mines or heavy military equipment at this nuclear facility.
