The community of President Lech Kaczyński’s Academic Civic Club in Poznań asks the president to pardon Marika, a student of the Poznań Technical University, who has been sentenced to three years in prison.
We do not believe that this person is innocent. However, we are moved by the gross incomparability of the punishment with the crime committed. The emotional response of a young, 21-year-old person with no previous punishment, consisting of a failed attempt to pull out a linen bag in provocative colors, should lead to the imposition of an appropriate punishment. Three years of absolute imprisonment is far too harsh a sentence.
Marika is currently enjoying a break from serving her sentence after a year in prison.
The argument in her favor is the fact that she regrets what she did. This is an attitude contrary to the attitude of other famous people who have been more leniently punished for much more serious acts.
We consider an important aspect of this case to be the fact that the court that issued such a drastic sentence has already granted Marika’s leniency application.
We trust that Mr. President will share our view on this matter and exercise the right of clemency.
