Prime Minister Morawiecki, thank you for not leaving behind a friend in need and for sending a team of highly qualified medics, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on Twitter on Thursday. The politician referred to the Polish government’s decision to provide health support to Saakashvili.
I am grateful to the Polish nation. (…) Georgia and Poland forever together
added the former Georgian leader.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Wednesday that tests by Polish doctors have begun.
We don’t leave friends in need. On my orders (…) Polish doctors from the Humanitarian and Medical Relief Team in Georgia began a comprehensive medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili
– announced the head of government on Twitter.
Saakashvili and his relatives have been demanding for months that doctors from Poland be admitted to the former head of state, the Georgian agency Interpressnews reports. As added on the pages of the civil.ge portal, the Ministry of Health of Georgia finally gave permission for Saakashvili to be examined by foreign medics.
Prison sentence
Saakashvili, president of Georgia from 2004-2013 and governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region from 2015-2016, is serving a six-year prison sentence for abuse of power as head of state. The former leader and his supporters see the sentence as politically motivated.
Saakashvili was imprisoned in October 2021 and subsequently led several hunger strikes there. He was taken to hospital at the end of 2021. Many Georgian and Western human rights defenders say the former president’s health is serious enough to threaten his life.
