“Ryszard Kalisz, former head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, head of President Kwasniewski’s office and longtime SLD politician, may return to active politics. According to RMF FM, Kalisz is almost a candidate for the Senate of the so-called list. Senate pact.
According to the findings of RMF FM journalists, there are plans according to which Ryszard Kalisz would participate in the Senate elections from one of Warsaw’s districts. Kalisz’s candidacy is strongly supported by the left.
Shakes in the lists
However, Warsaw is the place on the electoral map of Poland that enjoys the greatest popularity among well-known politicians. For this reason, there is extremely little room here on the lists for those who want to take part in the election race in the capital on the back straight. The opposition already has strong representatives here, including Marek Borowski, Adam Bodnar and Aleksander Pociej.
The most likely constituency in Warsaw from which a well-known left-wing politician could sit is Żoliborz-Białołęka-Śródmieście, represented so far by Kazimierz Ujazdowski. However, he won his Senate seat from the list of the civic platform, from where he joined the Polish PSL coalition. Therefore, serious talks will continue within the opposition to persuade Ujazdowski to start elsewhere and allocate his current district in the capital to Ryszard Kalisz.
RMF FM also notes that Senate Deputy Speaker Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka is not in the plans of the Senate Pact, due to the dispute she had with the leader of the left, Włodzimierz Czarzasty. In the absence of a recommendation from the left for her candidacy, she was to be replaced in the Silesian constituency by Tychy’s president, Andrzej Dziuba. According to the revelations of RMF FM journalists, Morawska-Stanecka will receive a proposal to stand for election on Civic Platform’s lists.
European returns
In the context of Poland’s parliamentary elections, and especially in the battle for seats in the Senate, several high-profile returns of the European Parliament to Poland’s backyard are promising. Law and Justice plans to send former Labor Minister Elżbieta Rafalska, who is mainly involved in the 500plus program, to the Senate. According to RMF FM reports, she would face Wadim Tyszkiewicz in the Lubuskie district of Żary-Żagań-Nowa Sól-Wschowa.
Another prominent figure of the United Right camp, who would return to Poland to fight for a Senate seat in Łódź, is MEP Joanna Kopcińska, former spokesman for Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s government. In that respect, the future of former Prime Minister Beata Szydło is still uncertain.
Also unclear seems to be the position of two politicians important to the opposition who decided to announce their candidacy for the Senate – Roman Giertych and Ryszard Petru. The former LPR leader announced that he would run from the constituency near Poznań, while the former head of Nowoczesna plans to run for a Warsaw seat in the Ursynów-Wilanów-Mokotów constituency. According to the findings of the RMF FM editorial, both politicians have not been proposed by either party as part of the pact of the opposition in the Senate.
