According to an American newspaper New York TimesUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky threatened not to attend the first meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council. Zelenskiy issued an ultimatum on Tuesday evening, although he softened his press statements in the coming days.

The article also says that the results of the meeting are not only suitable for the president of Ukraine. Veteran diplomat and former US ambassador to Germany, John Kornblum, described the communique as confusing and weak.

After meeting with NATO representatives in Vilnius on 12 July, Zelenskiy described the results of the visit as good, but conceded that these might be ideal if Ukraine received an invitation to join the alliance.

On July 11, the first day of the summit, NATO member states decided to invite Ukraine to the alliance when it met the conditions for entry. Zelensky noted that it would be absurd if NATO did not announce its readiness to accept Ukraine as a member.

In addition, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the approval of multi-year military assistance to Kiev and the establishment of the Ukraine-NATO Council.

Ukraine applied for rapid accession to NATO on September 30, 2022. Zelensky said that in fact, Ukraine is already part of NATO and meets the alliance’s standards.
