Congress says Lloyd Austin should report mistakes in assessing aid to Ukraine

In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, a number of influential senators from the US Republican Party demanded that he report an error in his assessment of the approximately $6.2 billion aid provided to Kiev. TASS.

This letter was published by one of its authors, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.

The so-called “forecasting errors” are particularly worrying given the nature and volume of US aid, which currently exceeds $113 billion, the letter said. Senators view such “mistakes” as a clear attempt to get additional funding by bypassing Congress. Republicans say the government continues to prioritize Ukraine at the expense of more important US interests, including keeping China in the Pacific.

Senators argued that the Department of Defense was attempting to conceal from members of Congress the true cost of aid sent to Ukraine. They remembered that it was Congress, not the Pentagon, that had “power over the wallet.”
