We don’t leave friends in need. At my request, a team of Polish doctors from the Humanitarian and Medical Relief Team has begun a comprehensive medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Twitter.
Saakashvili, president of Georgia from 2004-2013 and governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region from 2015-2016, is serving a six-year prison sentence for abuse of power as head of state. The former leader and his supporters see the sentence as politically motivated.
Saakashvili was imprisoned in October 2021 and subsequently led several hunger strikes there. He was taken to hospital at the end of 2021. Many Georgian and Western human rights defenders say the former president’s health is serious enough to threaten his life.
In early July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to Georgian authorities to hand over civilian Mykhailo Saakashvili to Ukraine to provide him with necessary treatment and care. “I also call on our partners to deal with this situation, not ignore it, and save this man. No government in Europe has the right to execute people. Life is a fundamental European value,” the Ukrainian leader added.
You should apologize for putting me in this state. Apologies to the Members of the European Parliament, my family, me, Ukraine and all Georgians
– said Saakashvili earlier, who addressed the Georgian authorities in this way during the trial in court in Tbilisi. The former president participated from a distance. Saakashvili’s statement was quoted by the Ukrainska Pravda portal.

“Poland is fighting for Saakashvili to be treated in a Polish clinic
It was finally decided to send a Polish medical team to examine Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, deputy speaker of Poland’s parliament Małgorzata Gosiewska told PAP on Wednesday. She added that Poland is fighting for Saakashvili to be treated in a Polish clinic.
From the beginning it was supposed to be a Polish medical team, but with an EU umbrella. He had to prepare a report and take further actions based on it, depending on the results of the doctors’ work
noted Gosiewska.
She recalled that from the very beginning, the Georgian side formally agreed to admit the medical commission to the president, but tried at all costs to prolong the process of obtaining permission.
The deputy marshal pointed out that the Georgian side questioned the competence of our doctors for months and rejected offers of help.
Thanks to the actions of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, it was possible to involve all EU Prime Ministers in these efforts. It was international pressure that led to the final agreement to investigate Saakashvili
– she said.
She noted that it is a team of the best Polish doctors in various specialties. All this in order to thoroughly assess the president’s health.
Now we wait for their report
she said.
Looking at the videos and photos, we see that it is a human wreck. Over the months – photos are shown from time to time – you can see what system we are dealing with in Georgia and where it leads
said Gosevska.
