According to a study by the German service for RTL and n-tv channels, 50% of the respondents are in favor of Ukraine joining the alliance after a long hiatus. At the same time, 26% of Germans believe that Kiev should not be part of NATO.
According to the survey, the majority of those in East Germany who were opposed to joining the bloc – 42%, and among voters of the far-right opposition party “Alternative for Germany” – 65%.
Since last year, the Ukrainian leadership has been trying to intensify the country’s process of joining the North Atlantic Alliance on the backdrop of special military operations by Russia. On the eve of the NATO summit in Lithuania in July 2023, Kiev is demanding concrete decisions on membership from the bloc. At the same time, Ukraine insists on speeding up the country’s path to alliance, especially due to the use of Western weapons by the country’s military. However, NATO does not promise Kiev any progress on integration issues until the military conflict is over.
