“Poland expects the NATO summit in Vilnius to provide Ukraine with information on its accession path to the Alliance, Elżbieta Witek, president of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, said in Riga on Monday. According to her, Ukraine must be a member of NATO, also to guarantee European security.
Speaker of the Seimas in Latvia
Marshal Witek has been visiting Latvia since Sunday; On Monday, she attended a working breakfast in Riga with the Speakers of the Parliaments of: Lithuania – Viktoria Czmilyte-Nielsen, Estonian – Lauri Hussar, Latvian – Edvards Smiltens, Head of the German Bundestag Baerbel Bas and President of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk .
After that, the parliamentary speakers appeared at a joint press conference to inform about the statement they signed that day, in which, on the eve of the NATO summit, they, among other things, called on the allied states to create a fast track for Ukraine’s admission and to support the peace plan of the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
It is important to me that on every occasion of such meetings, such as this one, we always invite Ukraine, because today the security of Europe means a swift, victorious end to Ukraine’s war
– said Witek at a press conference.
She added that Poland has committed itself to reaching out to the ambassadors of African countries because – as she pointed out – the disinformation that Russia is spreading in African countries is unimaginable.
We want to fight this disinformation because we know what problems we will have if the Russians take strong positions in Africa
remarked the marshal.
Poland expects good solutions for Ukraine at the NATO summit
At the same time, she stressed that Poland expected the NATO summit in Vilnius to provide Ukraine with information on the path of that country’s accession to NATO.
Ukraine must be a member of NATO, also to guarantee the security of Europe, because of its army, which has been training since 2014
observed Witek.
She noted that the greatest guarantee of Europe’s security would be what Poland has been asking for for a long time – a rapid delivery of state-of-the-art weapons to Ukraine.
Their soldiers have shown that they can fight, they can use the most modern weapons and they must continue to do so
Witek said.
She said that after the summit there would be another meeting to which Poland has committed itself.
I will want to organize this meeting in Warsaw because we want to know what’s next
– emphasized the Marshal of the Sejm.
Joint statement
The head of the Latvian parliament, Smiltens, stressed that the joint statement shows the unity of the countries of the region in their support for Ukraine. He noted that the signatories are calling on NATO members to make commitments to accept Ukraine and prepare a path to carry out this process.
He stressed that the statement also included a call for prompt and concrete support to Ukraine and to meet its needs regarding the coordinated enhancement of its military potential, including by providing the necessary armaments and ammunition.
The document, he said, also called for further support for Ukraine’s efforts to defend the integrity of its territory and for increasing and sharpening EU-NATO strategic cooperation on security.
Voices of other countries
The head of the Lithuanian parliament, Czmilyte-Nielsen, called on allies to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, not only in view of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, but also – as she stressed – because of the unpredictability of policies and performance of Belarus. She also spoke about joint infrastructure projects being carried out by the countries in the region.
The head of the Hussar of the Estonian Parliament stressed the need to bring to justice and punish those responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
Stefanczuk: We are counting on a clear message from the NATO summit
The chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Stefanchuk emphasized that 99 percent. Ukrainians want their country to join NATO.
We are a society that wants peace, wants to be safe and sees NATO as a guarantee of its security for the future
– he said.
He thanked the heads of the parliaments for their joint statement and for the fact that the societies of their countries “stand with Ukraine during this terrible war”.
We are counting on a very clear message from the NATO summit in Vilnius, if it was as strong as your statement, that would be great
he said.
He assured that Ukraine would follow step by step the path towards full membership of the North Atlantic Alliance and the EU.
We no longer understand Russia, we no longer understand his behavior, there is a chasm between us. But we are glad that we have unity with you on the side of freedom, peace and democracy, we have your support. For this unity is hope for the future, hope for peace for the world
Stefanczuk said.
