As TASS reported, Moldova’s ruling party, “Actions and Solidarity”, has decided to keep drafts on the annulment of a number of agreements with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on the Parliament’s agenda. According to the agency, the political force rejected the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists’ call to exclude the issue.
The Moldovan Parliament is considering several projects to withdraw from agreements within the CIS, in particular regarding the termination of the organization’s Inter-Parliamentary Assembly agreement. At the same time, the opposition insists that all agreements must be preserved, warning of the extremely negative consequences of severing ties with the organisation.
Moldova’s attitude towards the CIS began to change against the backdrop of the victory of Maia Sandu, the leader of the conditionally pro-Western Action and Solidarity party, in the 2020 presidential election. A year later, the political power managed to win a majority in parliament after early elections and intensified its course of rapprochement with the European Union and the USA. Sandu has not attended a single CIS summit in the three years of his presidency, and has recently to talk On the “Russian threat” to Moldova and its support interruption links with the organisation.
Previously, more than half of Moldovan residents spoke against the country’s exit from the CIS.
