Renat Karchaa, Advisor to the General Manager of Rosenergoatom Concern, said that connecting the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to the 330 kV backup power transmission line significantly increased the safety level at the facility. TASS.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that four months later, ZNPP was connected to one of six emergency 330 kV transmission lines. The line is in working condition and will be used as a backup.

Karchaa noted that connecting this line creates a backup power supply system for nuclear power units that will be used in the event of a power outage to the 750 kV main line. This significantly increases the nuclear safety level at the station.

He also reminded that ZNPP’s cells are connected to six 330 kV lines at the Zaporozhye thermal power plant. However, Karchaa said last year, Ukrainian armed forces destroyed cells in exposed switchgears, including those that connected the ZNPP to the Russian power grid.

Until recently, the station’s only power source was the 750 kV line. However, this posed serious risks because when this line was closed ZNPP had to switch to diesel generators that could only be used as a temporary backup power source.

Zaporozhye NPP is located in Energodar and contains six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW, making it the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The station has been under the control of Russian forces since the beginning of February 2022.
