Tunel pod Świną is the most important investment in Świnoujście’s history; I am convinced that it will improve the quality of life of the residents of Świnoujście and their guests, President Andrzej Duda wrote in a letter to the participants of the tunnel opening ceremony.
The letter was read by the head of the President’s Office, Paweł Szrot.
In it, the president emphasized that the tunnel under Świna is the most important investment in Świnoujście’s history.
After many decades, it will no longer be the only Polish city without a permanent road connection to the rest of our country
Duda wrote.
He also pointed out that there is a strategic facility in Świnoujście – the LNG terminal. Lech Kaczynski. He recalled the words of his patron, President Kaczyński, that “Poland does not end in Świnoujście, but only begins”.
Cities like these have a potential to be exploited and they can also be the showpieces of our country. Poles, citizens of the Republic of Poland, real hosts of our country and its collective sovereign also live in smaller towns. Numerous investments are being made with them in mind, such as the tunnel that will be opened today
he said.
According to the president, the investment “illustrates a breakthrough in civilization and a change in governance philosophy that has taken place in our homeland in recent years: no longer divided into Poland A and Poland B, setting itself ambitious goals and developing dynamically.”
Duda pointed out that large investments in road, rail and air transport, energy and industry not only bring measurable benefits to individual regions and act as flywheels of the national economy, but also influence the way citizens think.
I am convinced that this modern, technologically advanced investment will improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and visitors of Świnoujście for many decades to come
– added.
I firmly believe that the positive changes taking place in our country represent a new minimum that all candidates for public service should now strive for
wrote the president.
New avenues of development, new opportunities and possibilities are now opening for Poland and Poland. I trust that with joint effort we will make good use of it, that the road to the realization of our aspirations and dreams is open to us
– added.
“We went to Poland with Świnoujście”
By putting this investment into operation, we have brought Świnoujście to Poland – said the mayor of Świnoujście, Janusz Żmurkiewicz, during the ceremonial opening of the tunnel under Świna, which connected the islands of Uznam and Wolin.
Today, June 30, 2023, is a historic day when our islands of Uznam and Wolin finally got a permanent connection. By putting this investment into operation, we joined Świnoujście in Poland, as Prime Minister Kaczyński said in 2007, recognizing that the construction of the tunnel under Świna is a Polish raison d’état.
Zmurkiewicz emphasized.
He said that “the first real opportunity to build a permanent crossing came in July 2007,” when Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński and Minister Joachim Brudziński visited Świnoujście.
During the short visit, the prime minister declared that Świnoujście should be incorporated into Poland
announced the mayor of the city.
A film of Prime Minister Kaczyński’s visit to Świnoujście was played during the ceremony.
Then it started
– he said.
A video was shown on the big screen in which Jarosław Kaczyński announced the construction of the tunnel.
Świnoujście, the Polish part of the island of Uznam, is the beginning of our country, it is the beginning of Poland – you could say – counting from the northwest. This part was for many years and is still not connected by roads (…). We have decided to change this wrong situation. A decision has been made and the process of implementing it begins. (…) Finally a tunnel comes here
– said Jarosław Kaczyński at the time.
The tunnel under Świna, which connected the islands of Uznam and Wolin, should improve communication between residents and tourists. Until now it was necessary to cross ferries to get to the resort, often causing long queues and delays. The ride now takes 3 minutes.
Provision of local government
The tunnel under Świna was built thanks to the determination of the Świnoujście local government – said Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk at the ceremonial opening of the crossing on Friday.
Today’s event ends the stage of dreams and passes into a real, safe, long-awaited reality
Adamczyk said.
Wherever the local government wants to cooperate with the government of Law and Justice, these tasks succeed. Regardless of the opinion of local governments, despite the difficulties and problems, these tasks are successful
– said the Minister of Infrastructure.
The tunnel under Świna connected the islands of Uznam and Wolin. Until now, ferries have been required to reach the resort, often resulting in long queues and delays. The journey through the almost 1.5 km long tunnel takes about 2 minutes.
The first drivers will drive over the new crossing in the evening. A maximum speed of 50 km/h applies in the tunnel; Compliance with the rules will be checked by section speed measurements.
The investor is Świnoujście, and the alternate investor – the Szczecin branch of GDDKiA. The contractor is a consortium of PORR/Gülermak companies. The construction costs exceed PLN 900 million, of which almost PLN 775.7 million comes from EU funds. Świnoujście contributes the rest from its own budget.
