A plaque commemorating Walentynowicz was destroyed
The plaque dedicated to Anna Walentynowicz has been removed from the facade of the tenement house. Grunwaldzka in Gdańsk, not far from where she lived. The residents of Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz informed about this event on social media.
Gdańsk Police Press Officer Subinsp. Magdalena Ciska told PAP that based on a message about the destruction of the sign, which appeared on one of the Internet portals, the police dealt with the case and explained in detail the circumstances of the event.
Agents have inspected the area, are talking to people who may have information about this incident and are checking the area for the presence of surveillance
– she said.
The Institute of National Remembrance is willing to finance the new plaque
The president of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dr. Karol Nawrocki, in an interview with PAP, recalled that “Anna Walentynowicz was the +Mother of Solidarity+, one of the icons of NSZZ Solidarity”.
He noted that it is not yet known who is behind the removal of the plaque, but this is “another incident in Gdańsk”. He recalled two destructions of the exhibition dedicated to Pope John Paul II entitled “You woke us up, we will defend you”, which was located in front of the headquarters of NSZZ “Solidarity” in Gdańsk.
We can see these negative emotions returning from time to time to the icons of 20th century history in Gdańsk
said Nawrocki.
On behalf of the Institute of National Remembrance, I can make a statement to those who did it, but also to those who regret that this plaque was lost, that the Institute is ready to fund another plaque dedicated to Anna Walentynowicz
– he noted and added that “no vandal will decide whether the legend of Solidarity is commemorated in public space or not.”
The plaque dedicated to Anna Walentynowicz was solemnly unveiled on April 8, 2011.
