The inauguration of a major infrastructure project under the Świna River is a celebration for the island of Uznam. But the implementation of the $220 million project also shows on the German side how much it has slept lately and that it must now act quickly in the event of road problems, notes Ostsee Zeitung. Otherwise, many visitors simply drive through the tunnel to Poland – and stay there for the holidays, the daily notes.
“Poland only needed three and a half years”
A tunnel will open under Świna on Friday, connecting the islands of Uznam and Wollin – “and at the same time creating a third permanent access to the holiday island of Uznam (apart from the German bridges in Wolgast and Zecherin, which need renovation).
It took Poland just three and a half years to build the 1,800-meter crossing over the Świna River
takes note of the Ostsee Zeitung (OZ), which notes that the EUR 220 million budget was “strictly adhered to”.
Certainly, the tunnel under the Świna River benefits all of Usedom. Since the new access road also makes it easier for holidaymakers to reach German seaside resorts, there is now another alternative for arrival and departure. At the same time, however, the Poles show the Germans the failures of previous years

“Many guests will soon go through the tunnel to Poland”
The newly planned bridge over Usedom, including the Wolgast bypass, “has been delayed several times and is currently not scheduled to be completed until 2028.
There are big traffic jams on the German roads of the island of Usedom and a good bus and rail transport concept has still not been implemented. The national government and the region must act quickly and accelerate the implementation of projects. Otherwise, many guests simply drive quickly through the tunnel to Poland – and stay there for the holidays
– writes “OZ”.
