“The EC wants to change our way of life. Europe is also a way of life. No one will dictate how we should live,” Prime Minister Morawiecki said in Brussels.
The head of the Polish government participates in the summit of the European Council. Morawiecki assured that Poland would not agree to the forced displacement of migrants.
Poland is one of the safest countries in Europe and in the world. In Poland, nobody is afraid of the dark. And ask the inhabitants of cities and suburbs in the West what the state of affairs is. Why is this happening? Because we can control illegal migration. We know what needs to be done so that Poles can walk the streets safely
he said.
At the European Council, we will propose a plan for a Europe of secure borders. It is not for illegal migration, it is not for imposing financial sanctions, it is not for abandoning unanimity. (…) Solidarity does not need to be taught to us. We have hosted more than three million refugees. We opened Polish houses. Europe saw it, Europe appreciates it
Prime Minister Morawiecki argued.
The head of government mentioned the referendum proposed by Law and Justice.
We do not have our permission for this. That is why we have proposed a referendum. Let people have their say on this. (…) The EC wants to change our way of life. Europe is also a way of life. No one will tell us how to live. We want to be hosts in our own country
– he said.
The plan will be to strengthen Frontex. (…) We want to strengthen the external borders
– added.
Mateusz Morawiecki also spoke about the difficult situation in some European cities.
See what’s happening in the suburbs of Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm or Paris, Lille or Italy. (…) As long as there is a PiS government, we will not agree to that
he said.
Unanimity rule
The head of the Polish government assured that Poland would not agree to the abolition of the unanimity rule.
The plan of some countries, especially Germany, is to bring about the principle of unanimity. This means that Poland will only be subject to decisions in Brussels. (…) As long as there is a PiS government, we will certainly not allow that. (…) We do not agree with abolishing the unanimity rule
– he said.
The prime minister was asked if he had already had the opportunity to discuss his plan with representatives of other EU countries.
As we showed at the conference in Bratislava a few days ago, we have discussed this extensively with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, and our approach is very similar. Today the European Union, the European Commission, is trying to get back on certain conditions. But we already had unambiguous provisions, very unambiguous – five years ago, four years ago, in the conclusions. And what happened – a few years have passed, and the EC pretends that they did not exist
– he said.
And what was their proposal three weeks ago? It was very clear: either you accept refugees or you pay 22,000. euros per refugee. Discrimination, not to use a much worse word
added Morawiecki.
He argued that the EC treats a refugee from Ukraine differently than immigrants from the Middle East.
We certainly don’t allow it
he stated.
