Wrocław police issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the officers intervened on Monday in Wrocław’s market square for a picket, not a press conference. New Left MP Krzysztof Śmiszek had previously reported that he had been identified.
Why was Śmiszek identified?
New Left MP Krzysztof Śmiszek announced on Twitter on Monday that he had been identified after Monday’s press conference at Wrocław’s market square. Police officers checked his PESEL and inquired about the reason for the meeting. When they learned it was a press conference and not a meeting, they refrained from intervening.
Śmiszek suggested that he report this police intervention to the Marshal of the Sejm as, in his opinion, it made it difficult for him to carry out the deputy’s mandate.
On Wednesday, the Wrocław Police issued a statement saying that the duty officer of the Wrocław Municipal Police Headquarters received a telephone report from the Wrocław City Guard before 11:30 a.m. that a “picket” was currently taking place on Plac Gołębi. The report indicated that 20 to 30 people would be present.
The intervention was accepted for implementation, because the Wrocław police had no information about the planned legal meeting on that day. A patrol was sent to the site to verify the contents of the report and take appropriate action. The agents did not confirm that there were any violations of the law and the work was completed without the application of legal measures
– we read in the statement.
A picket or a conference?
As written, the agents of the Wrocław Police who intervened on the spot, in connection with the report of the Wrocław Municipal Guard, regarding the event that took place on pl. Pigeon “pickets”, proceeded to verify and, as it turned out, identified the Member of Parliament of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Krzysztof Śmiszek.
The interview was intended to determine whether there had been a meeting before, as no other people were present at the time of the intervention. The deputy explained that he organized a conference at this place and also presented the topic of this meeting. Since the intervening police officers did not observe any violations of the law, they refrained from taking any further action and thus ended the intervention.
the police said.
It should be emphasized that intervention reports are registered and that both the police officers and the officer on duty did not know who the intervention was about or what the nature of the meeting of +picket+participants was when accepting the report. Therefore, the information appearing in some media that this was the subject of the intervention or the reason for it is not true. On the other hand, document verification is a standard and mandatory procedure for public officials, including in the case of public persons
the police statement said.
