NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is expected to remain in the post for another year. The portal announced that Euractiv He talks about the four diplomats of the alliance.

“His term is likely to be extended on Wednesday, June 28,” the portal writes.

Euractiv notes that NATO diplomats within the alliance have spoken of the current Secretary-General’s ability to lead the military alliance in crisis situations.

“It is not safe to change the captain during a storm,” said a NATO official.

Diplomats say the extension of Stoltenberg’s mandate gives NATO more time to focus on short- and long-term support for Ukraine rather than diving into personal discussions.

Alliance diplomats also said that if Ukraine’s counteroffensive had begun earlier, the conflict might have reached a tipping point by now, giving Kiev an advantage for the NATO summit in Vilnius in mid-July. In their view, this would have left ample time to change the Secretary-General, but the delay in the calendar forced NATO allies to rethink their strategy.

Stoltenberg has been leading NATO since October 2014. His mandate has already been extended twice, once for the second full mandate and the second in March 2022, just after the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

formerly known as Stoltenberg declarationthat he does not plan to lead NATO after the fall of 2023. According to him, he plans to complete the presidency of the North Atlantic alliance by the autumn of 2023, but he has no other plans.
