Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced the start of reconstruction of a part of Plac Defilad, called Central Square. City activist Jan Śpiewak reacted briefly to this information: it is our idea. It’s about removing the concrete from this place.
The mayor of Warsaw announced that instead of empty concrete spaces, a modern green space will be created, serving residents and tourists.
City activist Jan Śpiewak recalled in an interview with PAP that previous designs for the layout of Central Square, presented in 2017, were full of concrete.
Then we made a campaign with Miasto to joke ours about being a scandal. And only after we laughed at these projects and started gathering ideas for Central Park did they add some greenery. And for that they wanted to create a square where multimedia events would take place, and that was completely concrete
said singer.
He noted that only after pressure from the city, from us and from him, did the town hall organize another competition.
This is the result of our action. It’s our idea
he noted.
He emphasized that it is good that there will be greenery on the square, but that there is a huge concrete parking lot on the other side does not take away.
As far as I am concerned, the area around the Palace of Culture and Science remains a visual rubbish dump and there should be much more of this green. In fact, it would be good to return to the concept of Central Park
he assessed.
Transformation of Plac Defilad
During the conference, the mayor of Warsaw announced that the new square will be a green and tidy place, but that it will also refer to the history of the city.
The street pattern that was here before the war is being recreated. But the place itself will be different, modern and spacious, which we will all be proud of. This is part of the redevelopment of the entire center. All the streets around will change. Because Warsaw deserves a new center
said Trzaskowski.
Lawns with a total area of several thousand square meters will be created on the square. The project also includes the planting of more than 40 types of bulbous plants and perennials. In addition, there will be 11 types of shrubs and 109 trees, such as black locusts, ash, honey locusts, dogwoods, grujeczniks, ginkgos and magnolias.
Four retention tanks will be built on the square, in which rainwater will be collected for irrigation of the square. They reach a depth of 6 and in one case even 8 meters.
Six types of stone will be used for the construction, much of which has been reclaimed from the demolition of this square. It is planned that 1/3 of the stone will be recovered, while the rest will be supplemented with Scandinavian stone – graphite in three colors: gray, red and green.
The contours of the old tenements are made of large-format natural stone slabs in different colours: gray and red. The former courtyards are paved with recycled granite blocks from Plac Defilad and supplemented with granite slabs from the area surrounding the grandstand. The layout of the streets from 1939 is reminiscent of stripes of granite blocks.
The investment must be completed by the end of July next year.
