Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, we have seen an intensification of espionage activities in Poland; Tougher espionage penalties are needed to ensure greater security for Poland, PiS MP Jarosław Krajewski said in the PAP Studio on Monday.
Higher penalties for espionage
The next session of the Sejm, on June 13-16, will see the first reading of the draft amendment to the Penal Code submitted by PiS, which will tighten penalties for espionage.
Krajewski – who is the deputy chair of the parliamentary committee on secret services and the project’s rapporteur – assessed in the PAP Studio on Monday that these changes are “necessary to ensure even greater security for Poland and introduce punishments that fit for the threats”. .
When asked whether espionage activity in Poland has increased recently, he noted that since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine “an intensification of the activities of both the Russian Federation and the special services of Belarus” can be observed.
We must be aware of the important role that Poland plays today on the international arena, also because of the humanitarian aid provided and the very important geopolitical location when it comes to supporting the entire civilized world for Ukraine, which is fighting for independence.
– he said.
A test for the opposition
According to Krajewski, the introduction of a life sentence for espionage should have a preventive effect. Broader powers for secret services, in turn, are to improve their operation and “enable more effective collection of evidence”.
This is also a saying that I check for the opposition. Either they’re on the side of security or they’re on the side of the spies. There really isn’t much choice here. I think and hope that the members of the opposition will also support these good solutions for our common security
said Krajewski.
According to the proposal of PiS deputies, m.in. participation in the activities of foreign intelligence services against the Republic of Poland is punishable by imprisonment for up to 5 years; for giving information to foreign intelligence services, the transfer of which may cause harm to the Republic of Poland, is punishable by imprisonment not exceeding 8 years or life imprisonment; participation in activities of foreign intelligence services consisting in spreading disinformation is punishable by imprisonment of 8 years; for sabotage, diversion or terrorist activities, the penalty is 10 years imprisonment or life imprisonment; organizing or directing the activities of a foreign intelligence service is punishable by imprisonment for 10 years or life imprisonment.
