The freedom to engage in politics is greatly curtailed, an invisible ideological empire is being created – said PiS MEP, Prof. Richard Legutko. He criticized the EP for – as he said – trying to interfere with the history curriculum in Poland.
In the discussion entitled “Regional Responses to Neo-Imperialism”, moderated by the President’s adviser Prof. Andrzej Zybertowicz, the philosopher, MEP Ryszard Legutko, historian David Engels and Doctor of Laws Dominic Burbridge took part.

Prof. Zybertowicz: We have to go beyond the framework
Zybertowicz said that from a historical point of view, neo-imperialism can be located before World War I.
However, serious phenomena have come to light in the last two decades, we are looking for methods to describe them in a way that goes beyond states and national cultures, we need to go beyond this framework
he pointed it out. He asked the participants in the discussion to rate the usefulness of the concept of neo-imperialism for current phenomena.
In the opinion of Prof. Legutki, the concept of neo-imperialism is very useful. He said empire is the next level of political organization, we have – as he said – a nation state and then a federation – which is a voluntary association of different political organisms.
And we have an empire which is usually even bigger but it was created by conquest or subjugation there are different forms of subordination not always or necessarily by force and military
Legutko said.
He gave several facts and events which, in his opinion, illustrate this contemporary imperialism.
One event concerns the EU – the culture committee of the European Parliament has been harassing Minister (Education and Science Przemysław) Czarnek for about two years in connection with the history curriculum in Poland. Education and education are not within the competence of the EU, this is explicitly stated, and yet there is a strong push that this education, the education program should be subordinated to this higher political authority
Legutko said.
The invisible realm
According to Legutka, in today’s world, in many countries, “the freedom to engage in politics is severely curtailed”.
The question is whether and how we can fight it, and what are the reasons that a kind of invisible ideological empire is emerging, so powerful that even a completely sovereign, powerful country, one of the most important countries in the world , as Britain is subservient to it
Legutko said.
Dominic Burbridge said one of the challenges in the EU is related to how much depends on the individual people who sit in the European Commission.
Their interpretation of the treaties is moving towards a centralized model, and we are moving away from the US model of separation of powers, and we are moving towards the bureaucratic rationalization of economics and politics that we see in China.
said the scientist.
According to David Engels, “unification is typical of any late civilization”.
Discrimination, hierarchies are fading, spreading, and this is the source of leftist, socialist, green ideology, it is a manifestation of the decline of civilization. There is a tendency to destroy the organization from within in the declining phases
– he said.
