That was easy to predict. The opposition, terrified of the imminent appointment of a special commission to investigate Russia’s influence on Poland’s internal security in 2007-2022, rushed to the European Parliament for help. There was no doubt that he would get support. The same people who are grilling Poland today for “Lex anti-Putin” voted in February 2022 against stigmatizing the actions of former EU politicians who were corrupted by Russian companies. Nothing unusual. The Russian influence in the EU, the dependence of Germany and France on Russia and the powerful Russian lobby in the European Parliament are a fact.
The hysteria into which the opposition fell after President Andrzej Duda signed the bill says it all. It involves manipulations, lies, threats, distortions and attempts to divert attention from what is logical and obvious. Donald Tusk, who a few months ago himself demanded the appointment of a commission to investigate the ties of the government and PiS politicians to Russian companies, today suddenly runs away from this idea in panic. Probably because the special commission will analyze the Russian influence in Poland over the past 15 years. No one knows better than he how deep Russia lay under his rule in Poland and how meekly accepted the expectations of both Moscow and Berlin. So the heaviest guns were launched to torpedo the decision of parliament and the president, again reaching “the street and abroad”.
At the request of the EPP, a debate was organized in Brussels in which members of the opposition once again misled the EU body, delivered hysterical speeches about alleged Polish totalitarianism and encouraged further steps against Poland.
“Lex Tusk” – this is not another law that violates the Constitution. This is a special new tool, a modus operandi, of such an authoritarian power that knows it is losing social trust and support, and wants to stay in power by force. This was the case in the times of the People’s Republic of Poland and communism. So it is now in Poland
– said the PO MEP Andrew Halicki.. His party friend Rose Maria Barbara Grafin of Thun and Hohenstein she stated that it was a political tool to fight the opposition and excited people to take to the streets in protest against the authorities.
This commission intends to exclude public figures from participating in public life. This is not a one party or one person problem. This is a big problem for all of us.(…) We have only one tool left: street protests. I am convinced that on June 4 in Warsaw, the street crowds will gather
said Rose Thun.
The contemptuous smile from the EU Justice Commissioner to the MEPs of the United Right was unequivocal. Didier Reinders moreover, he confirmed these assumptions with a clear statement stating, without knowing the law, that the EU does not accept such actions.
The new law, which establishes a special commission to investigate Russian interference in Poland’s internal security in 2007-2022, raises serious concerns about its compatibility with EU law, because – as we understand – it overrides the governing body gives significant powers that could be used to deprive individuals of functions and thus restrict their rights
said Reynders. That was not the only caveat. He also made it clear yesterday that the European Commission still does not recognize the changes made by Poland in the judicial regulations as sufficient and that we have nothing to say about the unlocking of funds from KPO for the time being.

The prime minister best summarized this Brussels carnage Beata Szydlopointing out the ignorance of the topic of discussion by EU politicians and the brutal play of the opposition in the international forum:
Listening to the previous speakers, who have been elected as Polish MEPs, I am beginning to wonder whether they should not apologize to the Poles for calling for rebellion in Poland here in the European Parliament and talk directly about taking people. I wonder if it will already be a practice that it will be allowed to run an election campaign in the EP on time, because how to take these speeches, Mr Halicki’s hysterical statement. Why don’t you tell Mr. Halicki what Tusk and Putin talked about at Sopot Pier? Please let’s get down to business. Do you all who voted for this debate know the constitution? Do you know the text of the law you are debating? And above all – why do you oppose the creation of such a committee, which already functions in other countries, which works, among other things, here in the EP. Why are you defending Russian influences and not defending the interests of Polish citizens you represent?
No wonder the opposition’s message was picked up so quickly by Brussels. There are probably even more people who fear purge than in Poland. There is no response to President Duda’s call for the same committee to be set up in the European Parliament. And yet we know from the reports of individual EU countries how deeply Russian agents have penetrated the structures of individual countries. Even the politicians of the EP said it loudly. In 2016, MEPs from the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee supported the motion for a resolution, expressing concern at the growing propaganda targeting the EU by Russia, among others. According to US intelligence released in September 2022, Russia has spent more than $300 million since 2014 to influence politicians and authorities in more than 20 countries. However, the US State Department stressed that this is just the tip of the iceberg and that Russia planned to transfer “at least hundreds of millions more” of funds to support pro-Russian parties around the world. The practice is carried out by Russia using “poles” controlled by Russia.
In this context, the behavior of MEPs in February 2022, just before Russia’s barbaric attack on Ukraine, is interesting. There was a motion to condemn the actions of former EU politicians who were corrupted by Russian companies by offering them positions on boards of directors or supervisory boards of companies. How did the Polish opposition vote? Adamowicz, Arlukowicz, Belka, Biedron, Cimoszewicz, Frankowski, Halicki, Jarubas, Kopacz. Lewandowski, Liberadzki, Olbrycht, Sikorski – they never got around to voting “for”. Today they are alarming the European Parliament to block the appointment of an anti-Putin committee in Poland. Common interests, common fears, common fear unite them exceptionally strongly with Brussels today. As strong as all strong decisions aimed at Poland’s interests: the blockade of EU funds owed to us, the imposition of foreign solutions regarding internal and political affairs, constant punishments and blackmail, violation of sovereignty, ecological solutions that devastate the Polish economy, shocking immigration policy. Doesn’t the once mocking statement of the Eurokolkhoz become frighteningly emphatic?
