No one suggested Roman Giertych as part of the Senate Pact, so I understand he decided to turn himself in, New Left co-chair Włodzimierz Czarzasty told PAP. At the same time, he stressed that his formation recalls Giertych’s achievements, including as education minister.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Education (in 2006-207) and former leader of the League of Polish Families Roman Giertych, who has been out of politics since 2007 and works as a lawyer, announced on social media that he intends to to run for the Senate in his own committee from the Poznań district. He added that he counted on the support of the opposition groups who communicated within the framework of the Senate Pact.

Who nominates candidates?
In an interview with PAP, Włodzimierz Czarzasty stressed that the candidates for the Senate Pact are proposed by PO, Lewica, PSL and Polska 2050.
The names have already been passed on. No one nominated Mr. Giertych for the Senate Pact, no party, so I understand that he decided, and I don’t say this maliciously, that he volunteered because no one nominated him.
noted the politician.
The left – as a reporting structure – has absolutely never considered his candidacy
Black emphasized.
We remember what he did as a member of the League of Polish Families, we remember what kind of education minister he was
– added.
Competition in the district
Czarzasty pointed out that in the district where Giertych would like to run, candidates have already been submitted under the Senate Pact.
If the Senate Pact presents its candidate in this district, and a Civic Platform senator (Jadwiga Rotnicka) aspires there, Mr. Giertych will go against the provisions of the Senate Pact.
emphasized the politician.
At the end of February, representatives of: KO, Poland2050, Nieuw Links, PSL and the Local Government Movement “Yes! For Poland” signed a statement concluding the so-called Senate Pact. It is assumed that these parties will not run candidates against each other in the Senate elections will take up common candidates in all constituencies, they will be drawn from all parties in proportion to the opinion polls for each of them and taking into account the best odds in a given constituency, current senators belonging to opposition clubs will be given priority to apply for membership under the Pact.
The first Senate Pact was concluded before the parliamentary elections in 2019: Civic Coalition (PO, Nowoczesna, Inicjatywa Polska, Zieloni), SLD Election Commission (SLD, Lewica Together, Spring) and PSL – Coalition of Poland (including PSL and Kukiz’15). As part of the pact, the opposition in the vast majority of constituencies has put forward only one candidate for senator against PiS. Thanks to this, the opposition jointly won the elections to the Senate – with 51 out of 100 seats.
