Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has exercised his right to dissolve parliament amid the country’s political crisis. transmits TASS. According to the agency, the head of state made the decision after lawmakers tried to impeach him.

“I have decided to implement Article 148 of the Constitution of the Republic, which gives me the right to dissolve the National Assembly in connection with a serious political crisis and internal unrest,” Lasso said.

As the Ecuadorian president pointed out, the republic’s electoral commission has been instructed to hold both parliamentary and presidential snap elections. He also added that in such conditions the country’s Cabinet of Ministers can work for the benefit of society and that the parliament will not be distracted by political attacks.

“It is unacceptable that ministers and their teams spend so much of their time responding to the political attacks of the National Assembly rather than solving the problems of Ecuadorians,” Lasso said.

MPs in Ecuador requested the impeachment of the president on the backdrop of suspicions of corruption against the politician.
