In the Sejm, we will reject the Senate’s veto of the Russian Influence Commission law, PiS Secretary General Krzysztof Sobolewski said. They are clearly afraid of something – he added when asked about the opposition’s announcement that he would not put his representatives before the committee.
On Thursday, the Senate passed a resolution to reject the bill establishing a committee on Russian influence. The bill now goes back to the Sejm.
When the bill comes back to the Sejm, we will override the Senate veto
Sobolewski said in an interview with PAP.
As he later added, the law goes to President Andrzej Duda.
We hope that the president will sign it and that the committee will get to work in this term
– said the PiS politician.
When asked about the opposition representatives’ announcement that they would not send their representatives to the committee, Sobolewski said:
They seem to be afraid of something.
Further legislative process
To send the bill to the president, the Sejm must reject the Senate’s position by an absolute majority vote in the presence of at least half the statutory number of deputies.
On December 13 last year, the Sejm held the first reading of the bill written by PiS on the establishment of a state commission to investigate Russian influence on Poland’s internal security in the years 2007-2022. The Sejm passed the law on April 14. The commission will operate under principles similar to those of the Warsaw reprivatization verification commission.
The Commission must analyze official activities, create, duplicate, share information with third parties; influencing the content of board decisions; making harmful decisions; making advance directives on behalf of a government agency or company; entering into contracts or disposing of public or corporate funds. The decisions that the committee could take include: revoking an administrative decision issued as a result of Russian influence, issuing a ban on performing functions related to the disposal of public funds for maximum 10 years, and revocation and prohibition of security clearances for 10 years.
