It would be bad for a member state to use such blackmail against the rest of the community and the EU candidate countries, said President Andrzej Duda in his comments on the recent statement by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in his speech to the European Parliament on Tuesday that a reform of the voting system in the EU Council is needed so that more decisions can be taken by qualified majority.
We need more decisions from the EU Council, which will be taken by qualified majority, for example in the areas of foreign and fiscal policy. I will try to convince my partners on the council of this. To the skeptics, I would say, this is not unanimity or 100 percent. support for all decisions gives the greatest democratic legitimacy. On the contrary – it is the struggle for majority and alliances that characterize us as democrats. Finding compromises that take into account the interests of minorities is the right thing to do. This is consistent with our idea of a liberal democracy
Scholz explained his views on reforming the Union.
He again suggested that Berlin’s agreement to the expansion of the community depends on this reform.
During a press conference in the Albanian capital, President Duda pointed out that the German Chancellor asked him about this statement that the question of how decisions are made within the EU is the subject of many debates, discussions and doubts.
The German authorities, with the chancellor at the helm, are also well aware of this
he noticed.
Blackmail against the community
It would be a pity if a Member State blackmailed the rest of the community and the EU candidate countries that if its demands and demands were not met, it would block the accession processes
Duda replied.
According to him, this would be against the interests of the entire European community. The Polish president also stated that, especially in view of Brexit, the admission of new societies to the EU is a very important sign of the Union’s vitality and attractiveness.
To show not only the peoples of the Union, but the whole world that the EU is a living, growing and ambitious project
– he said.
Putting the matter on principle: if our demands, the demand for our hegemony in the EU are not met, we will not agree to admit new member states, it is in fact against the interests of the EU as a community
Duda said.
The president pointed out that the Union was based on fraternal cooperation of countries, which should bring peace and excellent economic development to Europe.
This fraternal cooperation was that these countries co-decide on their most important matters and on the development of the community; so that they have a sense of justice within the European community, and not that some states impose their interests at the expense of other states, which have institutional instruments to do so
Duda said.
