The Group of the European People’s Party wants the European Parliament to adopt a resolution on Ukraine’s accession to NATO as soon as possible. The largest group in the EP in Strasbourg has taken a unanimous position on this issue. “Ukraine’s accession process to NATO must begin as soon as possible. We are not setting a date, but there is no going back, says MEP Andrzej Halicki (PO).
“The EPP Group agrees that Ukraine should join NATO
The EPP took an official position on Ukraine’s membership in NATO. As Halicki emphasized in an interview with PAP, the Polish delegation and Poland’s position on this issue were dominant and set the tone for the internal discussion. In the end, it was possible to obtain unanimity among the MEPs of the entire group on this issue.
Together with the Baltic countries, we tried to answer all the questions and concerns of our colleagues from other countries, and I am glad that we were able to convince those who had additional questions. The EPP Group agrees that Ukraine should join NATO. Today we say clearly that this process must start as soon as possible: at the NATO summits in Vilnius and Washington
– Halicki, who was the initiator and co-author of the feature, told PAP.
He added that their position is a clear signal that Ukraine has proven that it not only deserves NATO membership, but will also strengthen the North Atlantic Alliance.
We expect NATO’s official decisions to confirm this position in the near future
he noticed.
“We should not be afraid of Putin’s reaction
He added that the EPP group will try to convince other factions in the EP to pass a resolution on this issue at the EP session in June.
Putin cannot determine NATO policy and Western policy. We cannot be afraid of Putin’s reaction and on that basis deprive Ukraine and the Ukrainians of the right to live in a safe country. That would be a mistake. NATO’s agenda and role are positive, it is a military defense alliance that, alongside the European Union, guarantees the security of contemporary democracies, Poland, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe and for the US. It should also become such a security guarantee for Ukraine and Eastern European countries
noted Halicki.
The European People’s Party feels responsible for the future of Europe. Since the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, we have been the political leader in Europe to support the Ukrainians in their war effort. Discussions in the EPP and our decisions most often became the official language of the EU soon after, followed by decisions in support of Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. EP President Roberta Metsola, an EPP politician, was the first EU leader to visit Kiev. Parliament is in constant contact with President Zelensky and Ukrainian deputies, as well as social and civic circles of Ukraine
– summarized MEP Halicki.
