According to Delfi’s report, Latvian President Egils Levits has abandoned his plans to participate in the presidential elections to be held in the republic on 31 May. According to him, this decision stems from the inability to reach a full consensus among the political forces of the state on his candidacy.
“No one has a clear majority. In such a situation, it is a real possibility that the decisive votes in the presidential elections will be given to parties that do not represent Latvia and Latvia’s Western route,” Levits explained.
As the President of Latvia stated, at the moment the country is not in the best shape, including security, so such a scenario should not be allowed in the presidential elections. He also added that such a vote would send a “false signal” to both Latvia’s allies and Russia.
“Given the current de facto coalition with pro-Kremlin and oligarch-oriented political forces, I have decided not to participate in the presidential election on May 31,” Levits said, emphasizing that his decision would help elect a single candidate.
