I hope that the Russian ambassador, Sergei Andreyev, will refrain from provocations like last year on Tuesday, May 9, said the head of the presidential BPM, Marcin Przydacz. He added that there is currently no coordinated EU decision to expel Russian ambassadors from EU countries. A similar position was taken by PiS Secretary General Krzysztof Sobolewski in the first program of Polish Radio.
Provocations of the Russian ambassador
On Tuesday, May 9, when Russia celebrates the anniversary of the end of World War II, the head of the Presidential Office of International Policy was asked about the possible actions of the Russian ambassador in Warsaw, Sergei Andreyev.
The politician recalled that a year ago, when he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a letter was sent to Russia “to refrain from such actions on May 9, as they can be considered provocative not only in the context of historical, but also current events”.
My opinion on this move by the ambassador remains valid. (…) I hope that the ambassador will refrain from such provocations today
– added.
Presence of EU ambassadors in Moscow
When asked whether after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and various kinds of threats to the Polish ambassador in Moscow, it is not the time to “tell Ambassador Andreyev that he is persona non grata in Poland”, Przydacz emphasized that “it is not is about the presence of Ambassador Andreyev in Warsaw, here it is also about the presence of our – EU – ambassadors in Moscow.” As he recalled, the principle of reciprocity functions in international politics.
In a situation where Russian ambassadors are expelled from the European Union, Russia will of course react in the same way, and so far there has been no such coordinated decision within the EU on the withdrawal of its own ambassadors. Maybe it falls pretty quickly, maybe this cup of bitterness overflows. So far there is no such common EU decision, our ambassador (Krzysztof) Krajewski is in Moscow, our diplomats work there, although it is known that this task does not consist of maintaining channels for discussion with Russia, because in fact this is not today implemented
said Przydacz.
Expulsion of the Russian ambassador from Poland?
PiS Secretary General Krzysztof Sobolewski also said on Polish Radio’s Program One that he hopes that this year the Russian ambassador will refrain from the provocations that took place a year ago and this time he will refrain from trying to pay tribute to the Soviet occupiers arriving on Soviet tanks to Poland.
I hope that this time the ambassador will refrain from paying tribute to the Soviet occupiers, who, when they entered Poland on Soviet tanks, did not liberate us at all, but exchanged one occupation for another. Only the latter lasted much longer and caused huge losses to Polish society and to Poland as a sovereign country
replied the PiS politician.
I hope that this year the Russian ambassador will refrain from the provocations that took place a year ago. However, if he wants to repeat his performance from a year ago, I hope our response will be decisive and firm
said Sobolewski.
When asked if it was about expelling the ambassador, Sobolewski replied that in his personal opinion it should be done.
On May 9, 2022, the Russian ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreyev wanted to lay flowers in front of the Mausoleum of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw, because Russia celebrated the day of victory over Nazi Germany that day. Demonstrators with Ukrainian and Polish flags prevented him from passing the site where Soviet soldiers were commemorated, chanted anti-Russian slogans and doused the ambassador with a red substance.
