“Gangster was the whole dirty game of suitcases. I didn’t want to participate in this kind of competition,” says Waldemar Pawlak in an interview for “Duży Format” when asked about the memorable events of the night of June 4-5, 1992, which were documented in the movie “Night Shift”.
Overthrow of Jan Olszewski’s government
In an interview with editor Piotr Głuchowski, Pawlak is asked, among other things: about what he meant when he uttered the words about the “gangster trick” at the meeting in the office of then-President Lech Wałęsa, where the new government, of which he was to become prime minister, , was formed.
The fact that Leszek Moczulski, the head of the Confederation of Independent Poland that supports Jan Olszewski’s government, received information from the circles of minister Antoni Macierewicz: “If he does not vote correctly, his SB employee file will surface”, which on in turn meant that someone who had files could determine the composition of the government and parliament in Poland
Pawlak explains.
But you were the ones who formed the cabinet that night. Were you gangsters?
asks Gluchowski.
Gangster was the whole dirty game of suitcases. I didn’t want to participate in these kinds of competitions
replied the former minister.
Negotiations with the Russians
The conversation also mentions Pawlak’s renewal of the gas contract with the Russians when he was deputy prime minister and economy minister in Donald Tusk’s government. Pawlak argues that it is a “big lie” to say that he has made Poland dependent on gas from Russia.
That’s a big lie. During PiS’s first rule in 2006, Finance Minister Wojciech Jasiński succumbed to Gazprom’s blackmail and agreed to a 10 percent increase in gas prices. Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński was aware at the time that they had been outplayed for using the word “blackmail” themselves. We have not changed the term of the contract and we have even lowered the gas price. And more importantly, we introduced the so-called reverse on Yamal. It meant the ability to send fuel the other way – west to east. In this way we ensured complete independence from the supply. Gaz System, a state-owned company, became the transmission operator in Yamal and since then we can buy Algerian, Norwegian and any other gas from the hub near Berlin. We still do it today
– to explain.
Is Pawlak afraid of the commission investigating Russian influence on the security of the Republic of Poland?
I expect shocks, there will certainly be an attempt to attack me. Perhaps this will finally give the commission a chance to inform President Jarosław Kaczyński and leading PiS politicians about what it really was like? First of all: when I became Minister of Economic Affairs, many civil servants from the previous PiS team still worked there. Among others, Maciej Woźniak, director of the oil and gas department, trusted by Piotr Naimski, then head of the National Security Office of the President of the Republic of Poland. When Prime Minister Tusk went to Russia for talks, he naturally consulted Naimski and Woźniak about gas beforehand. I personally consulted President Kaczyński directly – I will be happy to talk about it at length.
PiS will be very surprised
Głuchowski’s interlocutor threatens.
Pawlak’s return?
Finally, the former deputy prime minister is asked about his future. Will he return to politics?
I’ll say this: Nature draws the wolf into the woods…
It seems that the best answer to Pawlak’s words about negotiations with Russia will be the findings of the journalists from “Siet”, who described a few years ago that the former deputy prime minister cared more about Russian interests than about the Russians themselves.
