Sebastian Kaleta, Deputy Minister of Justice, sent two questions via Twitter to the former head of Polish diplomacy, Prof. Jacek Czaputowicz. Kaleta’s submission comes in the aftermath of Czaputowicz’s interview, which the former minister gave on TOK FM, where he criticized the reform of the judiciary.
Interview with the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In an interview with editor Jacek Żakowski, Czaputowicz stated that it was Sovereign Poland that contributed to the weakening of Polish sovereignty.
In my opinion, Ziobro’s party has contributed to a significant weakening of Polish sovereignty. It introduced reforms that are accepted not only by the European Commission, but also by most coalitions
he said.
Sovereign Poland contributes in a radical way to the weakening of Polish sovereignty and this name is something of a joke of the year.
– added Czaputowicz, who believes that “the European Commission now has a tool to tell the state what reforms to implement.”
According to the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the KPO was not paid, because although Poland “has introduced the law under the dictate of the EU”, the change process is blocked by a dispute in the Constitutional Court and “we cannot blaming the shortcomings of the Polish system”.
Kaleta’s questions
Sebastian Kaleta, Deputy Minister of Justice and politician of Sovereign Poland, reacted on Twitter to these words of Czaputowicz.
To Jacek Czaputowicz,
Professor, I was surprised to read yesterday’s interview in which you raised your hands about the EU blackmailing Poland, diverting attention from your responsibility for this situation. So I have a few basic questions for you, because I remember very well the attitude you took as the Foreign Office when the fate of Poland’s position on the conditionality mechanism was at stake.
When the Lord spoke the truth
in July 2020, when the Foreign Ministry’s strong call to veto the EU budget containing the possibility of blackmail, you as the Foreign Ministry categorically rejected this position and vowed that the EU won’t blackmail?
or today, when you claim that the EU actually obtained blackmail resources thanks to Poland’s consent?
The problem is that your opinion was one presented to the government and the leadership of the political camp as a guarantee that the payment of funds will not be jeopardized if Poland agrees to this mechanism. Why didn’t you defend Poland’s sovereignty then?
Why are you presenting the position of German diplomacy on the reform of the judiciary in Poland? Have you as MFA defended Poland’s right to reform in relations with Germany? Why do you accuse Poland of itself? Did you, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, proceed in this way? After all, the reforms in Poland do not violate any norms when it comes to the degree of politicization of the courts. This is a falsely presented vision to blackmail Poland. In Germany the courts are extremely politicized and you talk about the shortcomings of the Polish system as a German and not as a former Polish foreign ministry. Unfortunately, looking at your interview, it’s not hard to wonder why the German attack on Poland is effective in this matter. Since the person responsible for refuting the false story represents it as his own. Except you’re not an ordinary commentator. You were the State Department, and with these words you did not expose the shortcomings of the reforms, but you also raised the question of whether you, as the State Department, were the fifth column in the government?
Kaleta wrote.
The deputy minister did not have to wait long for Jacek Czaputowicz’s answer. This appeared on the website rp.pl.
Czaputowicz’s answer
At the beginning, Czaputowicz says he read Kaleta’s letter with “amazement”. He recalls that he has not been the head of Polish diplomacy for several years, so he cannot be blamed for the failed foreign policy of the Polish government. Czaputowicz also emphasizes that when he was the head of the foreign ministry, the ministry “repeatedly defended Poland’s right to reform the judiciary”.
You write about the conditionality mechanism, which is used to blackmail Poles. I believe that the conditionality mechanism approved by the European Council is a serious failure of the foreign policy of the government to which you belong. However, it was already December 2020, so four months after I stepped down as foreign minister
writes Czaputowicz.
The former minister also refers to accusations that he is presenting “Germany’s position” on judiciary reform.
Meanwhile, it was the Sejm that passed the law to adapt the Polish legal system to the requirements of the European Commission. If you are looking for the fifth column, I propose to take the lists of deputies who surrendered to the dictates of Berlin and Brussels and passed the said law
we are reading.
Finally, Czaputowicz admits that the European Union has actually acquired new powers at the expense of the member states. In his opinion, Brussels “ruthlessly used the actions of the Polish authorities for this purpose”.
I am not saying that sovereign Poland deliberately deprived our country of its sovereignty. I’m sure you had good intentions. In politics, however, it is not the will that counts, but the results, which are deplorable from the point of view of Polish sovereignty.
– ends his reply to Kaleta Czaputowicz’s letter.
