Following an agreement reached on April 28 with Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, the European Commission presented a €100 million proposal on Wednesday to support farmers in these countries.
Package details
This amount, taken from the agricultural reserve for 2023, will be spent on farmers producing cereals and oilseeds in these five Member States. The aid will help the Member States bordering Ukraine to partially offset the problems related to the impact of imports of certain agricultural and food products from Ukraine.
At the same time, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia committed themselves to lifting unilateral measures on wheat, maize, rapeseed, sunflower seeds and all other products originating in Ukraine.
The Commission proposes to allocate €9.77 million to Bulgaria, €15.93 to Hungary, €39.33 million to Poland, €29.73 to Romania and €5.24 million to Slovakia.
Five countries can supplement this EU support up to 200%. national measures, which would amount to a total financial support of EUR 300 million for affected farmers.
There’s another vote
The details of the Commission’s proposal were discussed with Member State representatives at a meeting of the Committee for the Common Organization of Agricultural Markets. All member states will vote on the proposal at the next committee meeting. If the measure is approved by the member states, the committee will approve it. It would then be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force the day after publication, allowing the five Member States concerned to implement it without delay.
