“Of course it was of great importance, both today and later, for the survival of our nation,” said Prof. Jan Żaryn, historian, director of the Institute of Heritage of National Thought R. Dmowski and IJ Paderewski, referring to the Constitution from May 3.
Undoubtedly, it was a manifestation and a clear fact of such an extraordinary mobilization of the generation of King Stanisław August Poniatowski and all those who advised him. The fact is that it was the Polish king who was the main author of this constitution. The generation that, after the first division of Poland, tried hard to reform the country, to strengthen power in Poland, to defend sovereignty. This generation opened the debates of the Grand Sejm, which was important from the point of view of the citizenship of the Republic of Poland
he makes clear.
Today the president spoke very interestingly in Castle Square that we could only honor the constitution freely and independently for 59 years during the 230 years of its existence, because there were either separations, or wars, or the reality of the People’s Republic of Poland
– say.
May 3 was undoubtedly considered the most important national holiday in the Second Polish Republic, combined with the decision of Pope Benedict XV and then Pius XI to also establish May 3 as a holiday of the Polish Church, the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary , Queen of Poland. This was, of course, a result of the victory in 1920 and the extraordinary concern of the Mother of God for the nation that did not succumb to the Bolshevik onslaught. Therefore, May 3 is secretly connected with our great, unique identity – we are symbolized at the same time by the white eagle and on the other side by the image of the Mother of God, especially the image of the Black Madonna of Jasna Góra
he remembers.
“There is no reason to be colonized by anyone.”
Prof. Jan Żaryn refers to the present time.
I have the impression that the widely understood Polish political elites on one side have people who try to have Polish sovereignty as our maximum legitimate pursuit of the existence of the nation and this is our right we are proud to have a independent, unique nation. There is no reason to be colonized by anyone in any way, this is not a 19th century colonization but much more advanced today
he notes.
There are those who would like to see our territory only as a bottom for profits that would come out of our country and be consumed entirely elsewhere this economic sovereignty is also a sign of our times but it is also about political sovereignty i.e. the ability to make decisions in Poland by Poland, and not by external institutions
he adds.
We are particularly sensitive to this issue because we are often occupied or dominated by other countries and we as a nation have always felt very obviously uncomfortable about this. This discomfort accompanies us to this day when someone gives a sign, for example in the EU, that we would have no right to sovereignty. This is not how you talk to Poland, because we feel uncomfortable and it is associated with our greater mobilization in defense of sovereignty. Our various friends understand it better
– underlined.
