Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Britain’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis will walk to King Charles III’s coronation to observe Sabbath rules, Reuters reported.
During the Sabbath, which lasts from Friday to Saturday evening, the followers of Judaism are not allowed to travel. Therefore, both the time of the President’s arrival and the route to Westminster Abbey for the coronation were adjusted to suit Sabbath requirements.
Charles III’s coronation, scheduled for Saturday, is timed to underline the multi-ethnic and multi-religious nature of modern British society
– emphasizes the American portal ABC.
The Archbishop of Canterbury’s office said Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu community leaders, as well as female bishops, will attend the ceremony. The anthems are also sung in Welsh and in both Scots and Irish Gaelic. The chief rabbi must say a Hebrew prayer during the service.
A multicultural celebration
I pray that all who attend the service, believers and non-believers alike, will find wisdom and new hope that will bring inspiration and joy
Archbishop Justin Welby, the leader of the Church of England, wrote in a statement.
In a meeting with the country’s religious leaders last fall, King Charles III emphasized that he had always considered the country to be a “community of communities”.
All the more important is that while 70 years ago, during the previous coronation, well over 80 percent of the country’s inhabitants identified themselves as Christians, today their numbers have fallen by half
– reminds the ABC website.
37 percent of the population has no religion, 6.5% is Muslim and 1.7% is Hindu.
