The devil has put on a chasuble and is ringing his tail for the mass – said Polish ambassador to the UN Krzysztof Szczerski in a statement ahead of the speech of the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov at the Security Council on multilateralism and defense of the Charter of the United Nations.
Russia benefits from its UN membership
The devil has put on a chasuble and is staring at the crowd. Today we are dealing with another attempt by Russia to use UN membership, especially in the Security Council, as an opportunity to spread war propaganda. That is why Poland will not take part in the open debate of the Security Council today
– said Szczerski in a statement to Monday’s Council meeting.
The Polish ambassador, together with representatives of other EU countries, condemned the debate organized by the Russian presidency in April on the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, will perform.
Peace and effective multilateralism are only possible if all countries respect international law, if there is no domination, no imperialism, no division into spheres of influence. We must return to the model of cooperation between free nations and equal states
– added.
Contempt for UN institutions
Just before the meeting, a statement was made on behalf of the EU countries by the EU Permanent Representative to the UN, Olof Skoog.
By organizing this debate, Russia is trying to profile itself as a defender of the UN Charter and multilateralism. Nothing could be more true. It’s cynical
said the diplomat. He added that Russia shows contempt for all UN institutions, and the best way for Moscow to demonstrate effective multilateralism would be to comply with repeated General Assembly resolutions calling for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Ukraine.
The international community must remain committed to ensuring accountability for crimes committed in and against Ukraine
he noticed.
