Handing over a report on Poland’s losses as a result of German aggression and occupation during World War II is an invitation to talk. The Germans will react sooner or later, this is not an insulting gesture, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture Piotr Gliński told the magazine “Polska”.
As reported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, on the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Piotr Gliński and the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, visited the exhibition “Memory 1943” in Kordegarda in Warsaw. At the meeting, the ministry said, the deputy prime minister presented the German president with the “Report on Losses suffered by Poland as a result of German aggression and occupation during the Second World War 1939-1945”.
The Deputy Prime Minister handed the report to the President of Germany
The deputy prime minister reported in an interview with the newspaper that as Steinmeier’s visit to the Kordegarda in Warsaw came to an end, he handed him a report “for obvious reasons for him as a minister, i.e. his responsibility for cultural and national heritage, as and for issues related to the huge losses our heritage and culture suffered during the Second World War, adding that he also felt obliged to do so because of the resolution passed by the government the previous day on the matter of warfare.
In his opinion, he considered the reaction of the German state to the Polish diplomatic note to be inappropriate. The minister added that the Polish government will constantly remind the issue of compensation – until Germany “starts negotiations and does not compensate Poland for the terrible losses we suffered at the hands of the Germans during World War II”.
“Germany will answer sooner or later
When asked about the German president’s reaction, Gliński stressed that he was “referring to this situation diplomatically” – he accepted the report and said he expects this topic to also be addressed in the conversation with President Andrzej Duda.
Germany will answer sooner or later. They should know that they will be asked about it every day, because it is the case in interpersonal relationships that they should be based on some common values. If we want to solve Europe’s and humanity’s problems together, we must do so on the basis of common European values. These values also include closing unpaid bills, in a literal sense, but also in a metaphorical sense, because some things have not been completed
– said the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture.
According to him, “there are no formal reasons for the Germans to avoid these talks”, nor any moral or political grounds.
